Ride Pads

Ride Pads

Sharp Edges

If the edges of your running surfaces are rounded,  it will allow water to flow flow up the sides instead of breaking away cleanly.  This will increase the drag on the boat and cost you some speed.

The edges can become round from wear or if its an ABS boat they were that way from the manufacturer.

There are a couple of ways to eliminate these rounded edges.  The first is with the use of ride pads which ensure that you get a clean edge to spill water off the ride areas.  These are basically extra sheets of plastic that are glued to the surfaces and slightly overhand the original hull,  They are an easy way to get a clean sharp edge.

Another way is to build up the round area with an epoxy micro balloons mixture, body filler or you can glue on small strips of right angle styrene strip that you can buy at the hobby store.  Once in place you will need to sand the new section back to the hull while keeping the new corner sharp.  Although this is more work then just adding a ride pad I feel its better since it adds the least weight and keeps the scale appearance of the boat.  You can see pictures and instructions on how to do this under the "Sharpen the Edges section" of the ScatCat 26 build article.
