Various Battery types

Types

Nickel Cadmium (NiCd).  These batteries are the most common rechargeable batteries in the world. It is important that you discharge these batteries fully before charging them, or they can lose their capacity over time.  This is often referred to as Memory Effect.  In R/C the Ni-Cd battery has the highest voltages and allow the highest current draw without causing cell damage.  These batteries are being phased out in favor of NiMh due to the toxic nickel cadmium which is harmful to the environment when the batteries are improperly disposed (i.e. thrown in the waste basket)

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh).  These batteries have been steadily improving and today's cells provide near NiCd voltage and amp performance plus they have much increased capacities (3300 vs. 2400). Ni-MH batteries and are not affected by the Memory Effect.  These batteries unlike Ni-Cd cells typically run as good or better during the second or third run during the day, they like being warm.

Lithium Ion (LI-ON). These batteries are the newest batteries on the block.  Lithium Ion rechargeable batteries offer higher voltage and capacity pound for pound than Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh, but at a cost.  These are just making their way into RC in special configurations and look to have a very promising future.
