Some Important Terms

Capacity

The capacity or how much charge a pack can hold is measured in Mah and tells you how long the pack can produce a fixed voltage.

Cell

One single battery canister. Commonly arranged with other cells to form battery packs.

Condition or cycle

The process by which a battery is discharged and charged. This cycling can help refresh a battery so that it will take a full charge.

Life Cycle

The number of times a battery can be usefully charged and discharged before it no longer will maintain a useful charge.  If you use a pack to deliver very high amps expect a shorter life.

Memory Effect

NiCad memory is commonly explained as a loss of cell or pack capacity after repeated charges and discharges to the same level. It is actually a voltage depression in the cell that causes it to appear as if the cell isn't charged. How often it occurs is a subject of debate.

Milliamp Hours (Mah)

Applies to how much energy the battery can store. The higher the Mah, the longer the run-time in-between charges. One Mah is the equivalent to 1/1000 Amps.

Reversal

In a battery pack, not all cells are equal. One will always be weaker than the others. As the pack is deep discharged, the weakest cell will use up all its active charge first.  As the discharge continues on the remaining cells, the current through the discharged cell is actually reversed and becomes a charging current.  This effect can reverse the polarity of a cell.

Matched Pack

Cells that share the same characteristics such as average voltage and run time are combined to form a high power battery pack.

Club Pack

A matched pack with run time or voltage that falls in a lower range. Perfect for club racing or for those on a budget.

Racer Pack

A matched pack with high run time and voltage. These packs are suitable for high-level racing where good batteries are a necessity.

Team Pack

The ultimate pack for the serious racer or for those that want the best.
